A Celebration of Reading: A Legacy of Literacy

The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation hosted its signature event, A Celebration of Reading once again at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s fundraiser was especially impactful, commemorating what would have been Barbara Bush’s 100th birthday. More than 1,300 guests gathered to honor her legacy and support a cause dear to the Houston community.

The evening was a resounding success, raising a record-breaking $2.6 million in support of literacy initiatives across Houston. Hosted by Maria and Neil Bush, kicked off with an encapsulating performance by the Texas A&M Singing Cadets. The event featured a dynamic lineup of speakers including Nate Bargatze, H.W. Brands, Victoria Christopher Murray, and Kelsey Grammer.

The celebration opened with a special recorded message from Dr. Condoleezza Rice, sharing heartfelt reflections on her friendship with Mrs. Bush and her enduring influence.

Throughout the night, members of the Bush Family, including Pierce Bush, Ashley Bush LeFevre, Sarahbeth Bush, and Julian LeFevre introduced each author and shared personal tributes to Barbara Bush’s legacy.

“This is a very special year for our family, as my Ganny will have celebrated her 100th birthday. She was a source of inspiration and kindness to all who knew her,” said Pierce Bush. “There is not a day that goes by that we do not think of her and miss her quick wit, friendship, and unconditional love.” - Pierce Bush

Co-Chair Neil Bush announced later in the night, the launch of the Foundation’s Literacy Legacy Society in honor of his mother’s centennial year. The Society will recognize donors who help ensure the sustainability and growth of our programs. Susan Baker will serve as Honorary Chair with Deborah and Monte Stavis as Co-Chairs.

“The Literacy Legacy Society will honor Mom and help to grow and sustain the impactful programs of her namesake Foundation, while recognizing donors for their incredible commitment to our community. Together, we can help more children thrive in life and assure for a vibrant Houston,” said Neil Bush.

This incredible evening would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Phillips 66 served as the Title Sponsor, Woodside Energy as Presenting Sponsor, and ConocoPhillips, the John P. McGovern Foundation, Gail and Greg Garland, and Stavis Wealth Transfer Solutions as Platinum Sponsors.
