Follow us Back to Lantrip Elementary School

In Fall of 2023, our Young Professionals Group built custom book nooks within Lantrip Elementary School classrooms. We recently visited Lantrip Elementary to speak with teachers.

Mr. Herrera, a devoted 2nd-grade teacher at Lantrip elementary, delved into the change he has seen with his students since the introduction of these cozy, yet beneficial reading corners.

“Thanks to the book nooks, I’ve been able to add a lot more books to my readers’ repertoire. I’ll place two books, one below and one above their reading level in their bag first, and then students select a book to add for their independent reading at home. This ensures that they are reading books on their level and for enjoyment,” said Mr. Herrera.

Mr. Herrera shared an anecdote that encapsulates the power of literacy, bridging the gap between classroom lessons and real-life experiences. He recounted a touching moment when a student, emotionally moved by a My Home Library book they had received from the Foundation, felt compelled to open up about the loss of a grandparent. This tender revelation sparked a heartfelt discussion among the class, with Mr. Herrera himself weaving in personal tales of his own grandmother, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of the significance of family bonds.

Moreover, the positive impact extends beyond the realms of emotional connection. Mr. Herrera delightedly noted how students eagerly reach for their book bags immediately after testing, excited to immerse themselves in the pages of their favorite books.

“As a teacher, I really want kids to love reading, so that’s one of the first things I try to instill in them, the love for reading, because once you do that, everything becomes so much easier,” said Mr. Herrera. “If they can read because they want to read, as opposed to reading because they are required to read, you’ve won half of the battle,” said Mr. Herrera.

Mr. Herrera shared how a newer student who was not fond of reading, became inspired by other students.

“As soon as he saw everyone’s book bag, he wanted his own book bag, and he would ask other students to read to him, and now he’s starting to read [on his own].”

As we reflect on the ripple effects of our collective efforts, we are reminded of the boundless potential that lies within every child and the pivotal role we play in unlocking it.

To join the literacy movement and impact the lives of students, a small donation of $5 will gift a brand-new book to students. Together, let us continue to champion literacy and empower the next generation to embark on a journey of discovery and enlightenment through books.
