Foundation Donates 250,000th My Home Library to YES Prep East End Elementary Student in Celebration of New Milestone

The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation hit a significant milestone through the Foundation’s My Home Library program – reaching 250,000 children and 1.5 million books – bringing the gift of reading for students to enjoy at home. On Tuesday, May 5, the Foundation hosted a free My Home Library “Book Bonanza” for all 700 students at YES Prep East End Elementary. Each child selected new Scholastic books to take home, share, and cherish.

During the event, Foundation leaders spoke about the value and importance of empowering children to be book owners and competent readers. Recipient of the 250,000th My Home Library, Bella, shared her excitement for her new books, including two Bluey books and the children’s classic That’s Not Funny, David

The Foundation’s My Home Library program provides economically disadvantaged children with access to books in the home to create a culture of reading success and inspire a lifelong love of reading. The Foundation launched the program in 2017 and piloted the concept in partnership with local school districts. The Foundation has donated home libraries of six books each to 250,000 children through My Home Library thanks to generous donors and corporate sponsors.

To join the movement in helping close the achievement gap, a $30 gift will provide a student with six new books they can hand-select from our Book Bonanza, helping us serve more children in local communities.
