STREAM Career-Focused Curriculum Inspires Hundreds of Campers at Camp Adventure

This summer brought the return of Camp Adventure at two local elementary schools. Partnering with Children’s Museum Houston, HISD and the help of incredible volunteers and sponsors, the Camp Adventure curriculum provides an entertaining and immersive educational experience for the summer school students at Atherton and Blackshear Elementary Schools. These camp programs are designed to inspire the campers to dive into exciting hands-on experiments that challenge, engage, and encourage new discoveries.

Our friends at Children’s Museum Houston constructed a STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)-based curriculum for Camp Adventure that allows students to explore real-life scientific discoveries. This year, the activities were career focused with an engaging activity to round out the school day. To offer the maximum opportunity for learning, Children’s Museum Houston provided an online instructor teaching the curriculum, and a teacher in the classroom that helps guide the students through the activity and answer their questions.

The students at both schools participated in activities that allowed them to explore potential careers. After completing the career initiatives, they receive a button that signifies their progress. The different activities allowed students to simulate biologists, artists, archaeologists, meteorologists, astronauts, physicists, chemists, and paleontologists. Each student was able to participate in active demonstrations including shooting rockets, creating magnetic slime, digging for fossils, inventing a color, making a water cycle in a bag, and so much more!

“Camp Adventure is the best thing in my life”- Quest, second grade student

The 4-week Camp Adventure program provides skills that students can carry with them for a lifetime. With active involvement and a stimulating curriculum, campers can start to shape their future careers and reach their full potential. We are so thankful for our staff and sponsors that have supported the journey of these elementary school students.

“Camp Adventure is very important to each of these students. It not only makes a large impact on their education, but they also are able to look up to the volunteers they work with. Camp curriculum not only includes educational concepts to discover, but it also gives the students an idea of what they want to do with their future. These students are all so excited to learn because Camp makes the concepts so fun! None of this fun would have been possible without the help from our amazing volunteers and sponsors!” - Camp Adventure Teacher
