The Curiosity Cruiser Visits Yes Prep Academy

Students at Yes Prep Academy received a special visit from a Curiosity Cruiser super mobile library on wheels and an opportunity to select a book to read, share, keep, and love. The Curiosity Cruisers is a partnership between our Ladies for Literacy Guild and the Harris County Public Library. In addition to providing weekly science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math (STREAM) programing, the Curiosity Cruisers make stops to schools serving economically disadvantaged children so that they have an opportunity explore, become book owners, and develop a love for lifelong reading.

Meet Daniel and Lanee

Daniel, an energetic fourth grader, eagerly shared his enthusiasm for reading alongside his mother, Lanee. Daniel boarded the Curiosity Cruiser and quickly selected the book “Diary of a Minecraft Zombie." For Daniel and his family, reading at home is essential. “Reading at home is very, very important,” said Daniel.

Lanee passionately advocates for literacy, echoing the moto,

"Readers are leaders."

She extends her gratitude to organizations like the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation for their support in nurturing Daniel's love for reading.

Meet Alijah and Achawna

Fourth grade student, Elijah, chose the book “A Boy Called Bat.” His favorite books typically consist of sports topics. The family loves to read and tries to read at home before bedtime.

Achawna emphasizes how significant reading is their home: “Literacy is very important. It’s important these days to know what you’re reading and understanding it. I love programs like the Curiosity Cruiser that gives away free books, especially for kids who can’t afford it.”

These two families exemplify the power of literacy in shaping young minds. Through their dedication and support, students like Daniel and Elijah are readers now and will become our leaders of tomorrow. Through initiatives like the Curiosity Cruiser, we can continue to empower Houston students and help champion literacy through the power of books.
